Description

Heather is a low-growing shrub that reaches a height of 20 to 50 centimeters, or rarely up to one meter. It is widespread in many countries of Europe and Asia Minor. It grows in acidic soils in sunny and semi-shaded areas. It is the dominant shrub in heathlands and peat bogs in Europe, extending to Turkey and the Volga region, as well as in acidic pine and oak forests. It is resistant to browsing and regenerates after occasional fires.

Heather blooms in late summer with pink or pinkish-purple flowers, but occasionally white-flowering plants can also be found. The dried flowers of cultivars remain on the plant even after blooming, creating interesting decorative effects. The fruit is a capsule.

The Latin genus name Calluna is derived from the Greek word "to sweep," as the plant was once used for making brooms.
