Description
Common fumitory is a weedy herb that can grow up to 30 cm tall with a gray-green appearance. Its flowers are pink or pale pink, with dark purple coloring at the tips. You will most often find it at the edges of paths, in fields, and gardens. It contains opium alkaloids (e.g., fumaricin, protopin, sculerin) as well as tannins, bitters, and mucilage. There are various theories regarding its name, such as that its blue-gray leaves resemble rolling smoke from a distance, or that it did not originate from a seed but from smoke, or that it was once burned in a fire and its smoke had protective effects against evil spirits, etc.
Blooming period: April - October. Harvesting period: May - July.
