Vitamin E

INCI Tocopherol
Other names tokoferol

Description

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that acts as an antioxidant and helps protect cells from damage throughout the body. It is found in sebum, which creates a natural barrier and maintains moisture in the skin. Oily areas of the skin, such as the face, therefore contain a higher amount of vitamin E. And since people with oily skin produce more sebum, they also have more vitamin E on their skin.

The amount of sebum along with vitamin E naturally decreases with age. Vitamin E is also depleted by sources of ultraviolet radiation (UV), such as sunlight, tanning beds, and certain halogen lamps.

Effects and Use

Its effects are quite gentle. It does not treat any specific skin condition, however, it helps with overall skin aging and lack of moisture. Known effects:

Prevents moisture loss from the skin.
Protects cells from damage.
Softens the skin.
Vitamin E may also reduce damage caused by sunlight by absorbing UVB rays and decreasing the skin's inflammatory response, such as swelling, redness, thickening, etc.
