Description
Gotu kola is a perennial herb characterized by round leaves on long petioles. It has a creeping nature, and its ability to form a continuous green carpet perfectly captures the term - ground cover. The five-petaled white flowers of gotu kola cluster in an umbel inflorescence. The fruit is a ribbed achene that naturally splits into two oval seeds.
Gotu kola requires a warm, humid environment, thriving in muddy to marshy soils. It originates from the Indian region and can also be found in other South Asian countries or on the island of Madagascar. Gotu kola can occasionally appear in dry soils or on rocks up to an altitude of 2500 meters above sea level.
The above-ground parts of the gotu kola plant are used for medicinal purposes in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda.
